More than 60 fire fighters are battling a big blaze at a Manukau City primary school.

The alarm to Mangere East Primary School in Yates Road was raised about 4.20pm.

"It was followed by multiple calls," Steve Smith, northern fire communications shift manager, said.

"The guys didn't even get there before they transmitted a second alarm because they could see the smoke and flames, now it's gone to a fourth alarm.

"We've got 13 appliances there and five executives with fire police and fire safety,"

Smith said there was one 30 by 15 square metres classroom ablaze, as well as another 15 by 10 classroom on fire.

"But the 15 by 10 is in a block of classrooms, so I guess the other ones are in danger of catching alight if they haven't already done so," he said.

It was the second major school fire in the upper North island in two days.

Kerikeri High School is likely to remain closed until Thursday after arsonists torched up to four classrooms in the early hours of yesterday morning.
