Firefighters battle deliberately lit fires in Auckland

Firefighters are battling a number of deliberately lit fires in Auckland this evening.

Several fires have been purposely lit along the railway tracks on New North Road in Mt Albert.

The fires spread several hundred metres along the tracks.

The latest fire in Mt Albert is one of many smouldering in Auckland this evening.

Around 50 Residents in South Auckland were evacuated from their homes earlier today after a scrub fire broke out in Clendon Park, Manurewa.

It took fire crews, nine pumping appliances, and two large tankers to bring the Manurewa fire under control.

Teams will stay on the scene overnight to ensure the fire does not flare up again. It is not known what caused the fire.

Fires are also blazing in Mangere, Warkworth and Snells Beach.

Another fire in Makarau took ten fire crews to bring under control.

Bush and scrub was well alight when fire crews arrived at the scene late this afternoon.

The series of blazes come less than a week after Auckland Council issued a complete fire ban for the region.
