Firefighters have extinguished a blaze which threatened to burn down a remote eastern Bay of Plenty school.
The fire spread quickly through the school hall into four classrooms, at Te Kura Kaupapa Maori a Rohe o Ruatoki, in Ruatoki, 15km south of Whakatane.
Fire service spokesman Colin Underdown says staff were alerted to the blaze around 6am.
Firefighters' efforts to battle the flames were hampered by limited water. A fire safety investigator is at the scene trying to find the cause of the blaze.
