Firefighters are having to contend with strong winds in the southern part of the country as they battle a forest fire near Palmerston, which is north of Dunedin.

Another in Clyde in central Otago was brought under control late on Sunday night.

The fire near Palmerston is thought to have been started by a sparking power line and warm and windy conditions saw the blaze spread through a private pine plantation.

Firecrews are still on the ground on Monday morning.

A scrub fire on the outskirts of Clyde threatened several homes on Sunday night but firefighters contained it within two hours.
