Fines may start to be handed out to people who go swimming with Moko the dolphin in Gisborne.

The District Council is warning anyone caught swimming in the harbour may find themselves being fined $100.

Spokesman Sarwan Kumar says they have the safety of boat operators, the public and the cheeky dolphin in mind.

He says no fines have been imposed yet and the council isn't keen to take a heavy hand but safety is paramount.

The local bylaw to be enforced will forbid swimming in and around the wharves, which covers the inner harbour, turning basin and channel areas.
