Whitireia Polytechnic's media training centre in central Wellington has being closed effective immediately due to earthquake risk. - Source: ONE News
One of New Zealand's biggest journalism schools has closed because it has been deemed an earthquake risk.
Students and staff at Whitireia NZ's newly refurbished Media Training Centre in Wellington's Cuba St have had to vacate the building until strengthening work is done.
For most students the year is virtually finished and a few last assessments will be done at another of Whitireia Polytechnic's city campuses.
Whitireia NZ chief executive Don Campbell said he was told last night that the seismic rating on the building was below acceptable limits.
He said he regrets the disruption for students and staff at this time of year, but alternative arrangements will ensure their studies are not affected.
And Campbell said all Media Training Centre programmes will run next year.
The strengthening work in the former Workingman's Club is expected to cost about half a million dollars.
