A father and daughter had a lucky escape in Hamilton this afternoon after they were hit by a car fleeing police.

District road policing manager Inspector Leo Tooman said police started pursuing the car when it was seen speeding on Matai Street.

The offending driver then collided with the innocent pair's car on Forest Lake Road shortly before 5pm after failing to give way at an intersection.

Tooman said the pursuit was terminated and officers went to help the people in the damaged car.

He said the fleeing driver continued on to Avalon Drive and police received reports of the car mounting the footpath and running a red light before speeding off.

Police tracked down the 20-year-old female driver who was arrested for driving while disqualified.

"People are generally disqualified from driving by the courts because of some shortcoming in their ability to drive, to then carry on behind the wheel sends a clear message to the courts of the offender's attitude while at the same time places peoples lives at risk, including their own," Tooman said.
