Police are investigating a fatal blaze in a retirement complex in South Auckland.

The one bedroom unit at High Street Courts in Otahuhu, was well alight when firefighters arrived late Tuesday night.

The fire is believed to have been started by a heater.

The victim is understood to be a man though his name has not been released.

The body was found after firefighters brought the fire at a single-level unit under control.

The Fire Service was called to High St at 11.21pm, shift manager Scott Osmond said.

When they arrived they found one unit well alight and were told someone was inside.

Ambulances were called to treat several elderly people suffering from smoke inhalation.

A fire safety officer is investigating the source of the fire, which caused what was described as significant damage to the unit.

Police said the body would be removed on Wednesday morning and detectives would examine the scene.
