Family found after region wide police search

Published: 3:51PM Wednesday December 05, 2012 Source: ONE News

A family which sparked a region wide search after police received a distress call, has been found safe and well.

Police across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty were searching for a man they believed may be armed and travelling through the area with his family in a blue Toyota surf.

The vehicle was stopped by Napier police shortly before 7pm.

"Waikato staff are currently liaising with our Eastern District colleagues but at this stage the important thing is all members of the family have been accounted for safe and well," Eastern Waikato Area Commander, Inspector Dana McDonald, said.

"Police from across the Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Northern Communications Centre and now Eastern District have been involved in the search for the family and I would just like to acknowledge their efforts."

Members of the public raised concerns about the car in Cambridge at around 2.20pm.

Police said an emergency call was also made by someone believed to be an occupant of the vehicle asking for help.

The vehicle was first sighted at Te Awamutu, then northern Bay of Plenty. Police had set up road blocks in Waihi as it was believed the car was heading towards the Coromandel.
