Residents of Waihi in the Bay of Plenty have been assured there is no tsunami threat after a problem with the local fire service's alarm system.

Police say the alarm started sounding around 9.30pm Saturday and after several minutes of it going off continuously locals started to evacuate.

Inspector Chris Robinson praised the residents and said they did the right thing by evacuating.

He says the alarm is now off and techs are now trying to find the problem.
