An explosion in a house in Ruakaka, south of Whangarei, has left a man with burns to 70% of his body.
The explosion at 8.10pm reportedly rocked houses along Tamure Place and four fire engines are fighting to put out the blaze, which has engulfed the home.
No other people were in the home at the time of the eruptions and no further injuries were reported.
At 9pm the fire was still going, but "under control" with no perceived threat to surrounding houses, according to the Fire Service.
Further south, three people have been taken to hospital following a house fire in Wanganui.
The house in Dublin Street was well ablaze when two fire engines arrived tonight, but firefighters put it out.
