Many Kiwi's have come to rely on the faithful ute, but transport experts are warning buyers to be wary of some new models imported from Asia.
The Malaysian-made Proton Jumbuck scored a dire one star out of five, for folding like cardboard in the latest crash tests.
And the Chinese-made Great Wall SA220 and V240 fared little better getting just two stars for safety.
"If you're buying these vehicles new they're less expensive, but you need to look at more than just cost, in many cases people would be better off buying a used vehicle with a high safety rating," says Andy Knackstedt, NZ Transport Agency.
The agency recommends four star utes from Toyota, Holden, Ford and Mitsubishi.
