Former All Black Stephen Bachop is to defend charges he assaulted his partner outside the Wellington police station on the night of the Rugby World cup final.

Despite negotiations with police, his lawyer Val Nisbet said no resolution could be reached and the case would have to go to a hearing.

Stephen Bachop, 45, of Whitby, has been charged with assault on the woman, common assault of another man, resisting police and possession of utensils for using drugs and possession of cannabis on October 24.

CCTV footage from the front of the police station allegedly shows the incident and could be seen on screens inside.

Bachop is alleged to have pulled his partner toward a taxi before two passersby intervened. He had been at the Green Man pub commentating during the All Black's win over France in the final.

Wellington District Court judge Susan Thomas remanded him for two weeks for a date to be set for a day-long hearing.

Bachop, who originally had suppression, allowed it to lapse in December to prevent negative impact on other former All Blacks.

Bachop played for the New Zealand Colts when he was a teenager, and for Western Samoa in the 1991 World Cup. He made his All Black debut in 1992 and played a further 17 matches for them.
