Police have found the man who escaped from Auckland Central Police Station where he was being held in relation to the alleged kidnapping a 29-year-old woman.
Brett Makiri was arrested just before midnight at an address in Papatoetoe and has appeared in Auckland District Court charged with kidnapping, injuring with intent to injure, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle and escaping police custody.
Makiri was remanded in custody until a bail hearing on Monday.
Detective Senior Sergeant John Sutton says Makiri had shaved his head in an attempt to disguise himself.
The arrest was made following the searching of several houses of Makiri's associates.
Police had warned that anyone caught helping Makiri hide or flee from police could face charges themselves. They had put measures in place to ensure the safety of the woman who was involved in the initial kidnapping.
The woman was driven to the Coromandel on Monday evening, instead of to a friend's house in a suburb near her home in Glen Innes.
She was allegedly assaulted at times during her ordeal but escaped near Coromandel town when the stolen car ran out of petrol.
An investigation into the circumstances of the accused's escape continues.
