Boy racer noise amplifiers and high-powered fruit cannons are two things you probably wouldn't expect to be embraced at a Christian school.

These are the products a group of students from Auckland's Seventh Day Adventist High are importing and marketing to the public as part of New Zealand's young enterprise programme.

To some people an apple cannon could be a potential weapon.

But to the Year 13s taking part in the enterprise programme, it has become a helpful tool for boaties, said student Chris Tuiloma.

"It would help fishermen cast the bait further than they would by hand," said Tuiloma.

The converted cannon is fuelled with a flammable aerosol, and it would shoot an apple core, with fishing line attached, the length of a school field.

The students are selling the fishing tools, imported from the US, for $300 each.

Then there is the other inventive creation which has raised a few eyebrows.

The students have come up with an $800 "exhaust cut-out" which will, believe it or not, boost engine noise at the flick of a switch.

It's not surprising who the target market is for this kind of product.

"We're looking at boy racers," said Tuiloma.

And then you would think that a vehicle with noise-enhancing features would hardly pass a Warrant of Fitness (WoF) test, but not so.

"A car has been put through an received a WoF with one, so it's quite legal," said teacher Shirley Upton.

The students said they will only sell the apple cannons to over-18s, and so far there has been no buyers.
