Electricity prices are set to go up, as consumers bear the brunt of changes Transpower is making to the national grid.

The cost of the major upgrade is being passed on to consumers.

This will mean a rise of about 3% on a typical power bill for most power company consumers.

Orion chief executive Rob Jamieson says: "It's very likely that prices will go up throughout the country. I've seen price announcements being made elsewhere in New Zealand and I guess it's inevitable that these sorts of price increases from Transpower will flow through to consumers," he says.

The higher prices will start in April.
