Auckland police are shocked by the actions of three young women who kidnapped an elderly lady and robbed her of hundreds of dollars.

On Friday afternoon they held the woman hostage for more than an hour, but they were caught on CCTV cameras.

"This is a tragic, ruthless incident and they should come forward," says Detective Sergeant Grame Timms from the Glen Innes police.

As the woman returned to her parked car in St Helliers two of the three girls bundled her into the back seat, then piled in, one driving, and one guarding her in the back. The third followed them in a getaway car.

They forced the woman to hand over her bank cards and pin numbers then drove her to a nearby shopping precinct right opposite Glen Innes police station.

There they tried and failed to withdraw money at two ATMs. The third time they tried they got lucky withdrawing $1400 of the woman's savings, however, it was all caught on camera.

The 82-year-old was held captive in her own back seat for a terrifying 60 minutes. The thieves dumped her in her car, a 1992 Toyota Corolla, at the Glen Innes train station car park. There she used her cellphone to call police.

"She was very, very shaken, obviously very, very distressed, and this will continue to have an effect on her, I'm sure," says Timms.

The women, in their own getaway car, carried on to a Panmure bottle shop where they spent a further $300 of the woman's money on alcohol .

"It is very, very disturbing, these women are dangerous, these women might hurt someone else as well," says Carl Singh from Tripoli Liquor Store.

Police hope somebody who sees the footage can help catch these criminals before they act again.
