An elderly widow whose wedding rings went missing while she was
having surgery in hospital over the weekend is adamant a staff
member stole them.
Dorothy Brown's family are calling on Auckland Hospital to explain
and for the thief to return what were her most treasured
possessions.
Brown, who had been married for 70 years, says she has never once removed her rings.
"They meant everything to me. I had a wonderful husband and I couldn't love him more, and wouldn't you like to keep your rings for the rest of your life?"
The rings include a gold band and diamond studded eternity ring that vanished while she was in Auckland Hospital's care.
Daughter Barbara Henderson was horrified when she got a call following her mother's operation saying the rings had been lost.
"They said do you have your mother's rings? And I said no, why would I have my mother's rings? And they said I must have come in and taken them off my mother's finger."
Henderson says the charge nurse also suggested a stranger came in and stole the rings or that her mother must have misplaced them.
"Mum can't stand unaided, so there's no way she was moving around the ward, she can't even get out of bed," she says.
Although Brown was still groggy from the anaesthetic she is convinced there's a thief about.
"I remember somebody standing by a drawer and they said we'll put the rings in this drawer."
Hospital management said in a statement that they are sorry the rings were lost and that they are now working with police to try to find them.
