An elderly scooter driver died when he apparently lost control of his scooter and crashed into a fence at Otway in the Eastern Waikato.
Emergency services were called to the scene of the single-vehicle crash at the intersection of Endowment and Andrews Roads about 2.30pm today, police said.
Crash investigators are working to determine what caused a crash.
"Initial indications are the man has lost control of his scooter and crashed into a fence suffering fatal injuries," said Senior Sergeant Rod Carpinter, Matamata-Piako Sub-Area Manager.
Serious Crash Unit investigators are carrying out a scene examination to try and identify any contributing factors, he said.
The man's death has been reported to the Coroner.
It was not expected that the man's name would be released this evening, Carpinter said.
The death brings the Waikato Police District road toll to eight compared to 10 for the same period last year.
