If you are looking forward to tucking into some hot cross buns
over Easter, don't worry, you are not the only one.
Hundreds of thousands of the fruity beauties have been rolling out
of ovens on Thursday.
In the bunfight to be the best, Wellington's Nada Bakery are the currant champs.
"Patience, quality of ingredients, love and care," says baker Michael Gray about the key ingredients of the buns.
The buns became popular under Elizabeth the first, the cross symbolising Christ's crucifixion.
Those starchy Protestants would hardly recognise these sweet treats, just some of the quarter of a million buns made by Baker's Delight on Thursday.
The chain has been preparing the buns since the last week of January and expects to have made close to one million by the end of the Easter holiday.
That's enough Hot Cross Buns to cover a rugby field.
General Manager Colleen Milne says the Thursday before Easter is one of their busiest days on the baking calendar.
"This year we have got a mocha which is a mixture of coffee and chocolate and that's been really popular as well," says Milne.
So in these hard, modern times a traditional treat still has bakers rolling in it.
Easter eggs popular too
The recession is actually boosting Easter egg sales as well as people look for some comfort.
Angie Davies from the Kirkcaldie and Stains Easter shop says sales this year are better than ever and many brands have sold out.
She says people are still willing to splurge on Easter even though they're tightening their belts in other areas.
Davies says there's just enough stock to last.
