A 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck the King Country region late last night.
GNS Science said the quake at 11.21pm was centred 30 kilometres west of Taumarunui at a depth of 250 kilometres.
The quake was felt widely in the central and southern North Island but there have been no reports of damage.
Quake-ravaged Christchurch has had a quiet period over the last two days.
A 3.2 magnitude aftershock was recorded at 11.28pm last night centred 10 kilometres east of Christchurch.
Earlier in the day a magnitude 3.0 tremor struck in the same area at 1.23pm.
On Monday a 3.6 jolt was felt at 6.41am, located within five kilometres of Lyttelton.
