A decision on whether the building of Dunedin's controversial new stadium will go ahead is expected on Friday morning.

Construction of the $200 million stadium has been put on hold after lobby group, Stop the Stadium filed a court injunction against the Dunedin City Council to try to stop the plan.

The group says the project's changed substantially and further public consultation is needed.

Justice Chisholm heard arguments yesterday from both sides in the High Court at Christchurch.

Chisholm has indicated that he will release his decision on Friday morning.

If he denies the injunction, the Dunedin City Council is free to sign off on a $164 million construction contract with Hawkins Construction.

If he accepts the consultation around the issue has been faulty and upholds the injunction, the project will be thrown into confusion.
