Dunedin's bid for a covered sports stadium to replace Carisbrook has had a major boost.

The Stadium Trust has reached an agreement with a naming sponsor for an undisclosed sum.

If the project goes ahead it will be called Forsyth Barr Stadium.

The trust expects to reach its target of $27 million in private funding before next month's council meeting to decide if the stadium will go ahead.

Opponents plan a protest march on Saturday.
