Incidents mar start of duckshooting

A man has died during a family duck shooting expedition at Waiohiki on the outskirts of Napier.

Police say Michael Leslie Meehan, 47, from Napier died from gunshot wounds.

The coroner is investigating.

Police say the tragedy, which happened around 10am, highlights the need to follow firearms safety rules and to take extreme care around firearms.

In another incident involving a 22-year-old man has been shot in the face and is undergoing surgery for an eye injury in Wellington Hospital.

He was with a group of friends at a privately-owned dam near Waipukurau when the shooting happened about 10am. His condition is not thought to be life-threatening.

Police are speaking to those involved.
