A Pukete woman involved in a car crash that killed an elderly woman on Christmas Day last year was later found with illicit drugs in her vehicle.

Jonelle Ann Williams, 26, yesterday pleaded guilty in Hamilton District Court to failing to stop and ascertain injury, driving while suspended and possessing LSD.

She had initially fled the crash scene at the intersection of Avalon Rd and Te Rapa Rd but was followed by witnesses to her Pukete house.

When police arrived to speak with Williams, they found three tablets of the drug in her vehicle.

The court was told Williams' driver's licence was suspended in November last year for excess demerit points but on Christmas Day she drove her children to their grandparents' house.

Returning to her Pukete house, Williams was travelling east along Avalon Dr when she struck a Mitsubishi Colt travelling north along Te Rapa Rd.

A police summary indicates the Mitsubishi ran a red light.

Williams' vehicle struck the rear left-hand passenger door of the Mitsubishi killing 71-year-old Chinese national Rongomei Wang.

Williams later told police she panicked and fled the crash scene, knowing her licence was suspended.

She denied knowing LSD tablets were in her car.

Judge Noel Cocurullo remanded Williams on bail for sentencing in May.

Last week, a 57-year-old man appeared in court charged with careless driving causing the death of Ms Wang. He pleaded not guilty and was remanded on bail for a status hearing in May.
