Water Safety New Zealand says an increasing number of people out swimming or boating are drowning.
General manager Matt Claridge says 96 people drowned from all causes last year, 14 fewer than in 2007. But he says 60 people drowned while boating or swimming, accounting for 63% of all drowning deaths.
Claridge says that means New Zealanders don't have the skills and knowledge to be out on the water and enjoy it safely.
He says last year was one of the highest holiday period drowning tolls in recent times.
