Physiotherapists say a sharp drop in the number of patients seeking treatment is a result of confusion over the recent ACC law change.

The New Zealand Society of Physiotherapists reports visits to physios have dropped by between 30% and 50%.

But ACC Minister Nick Smith says there was abuse and over-use when physio services were free and he always expected the number of people seeking treatment to drop once ACC tightened up.

He's satisfied people who need physiotherapy are able to pay the $10 to $30 part charge - but says the partial charge policy policy will be reviewed in May.
