A van driver is in a critical condition after being attacked in an alleged road rage incident in Auckland.

Police say the attack occurred after a "minor crash" between the van and a BMW along Carrington Road outside Unitec in Mt Albert about 7:50am on Tuesday.

"It appears the driver of the BMW then alighted from his car and attacked the driver of the van, pulling him from his vehicle to continue the alleged assault," police spokeswoman Noreen Hegarty says.

Hegarty says a man was charged with assault following the attack and was assisting police with their inquiries into the incident.

She says the van driver has been taken to Auckland Hospital, where his condition is described as critical.

Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Scott of Avondale CIB has appealed for any witnesses to the alleged assault to come forward.
