Convicted double murderer Graeme Burton has been sentenced to preventive detention for the attempted murder of a fellow prison inmate.

Burton was found guilty last November by a jury of the attempted murder of Dwayne Marsh at Auckland Prison at Paremoremo and in the High Court in Auckland on Friday was sentenced to the indefinite term of preventive detention.

It will be served concurrently with the indefinite sentence he already faces for killing Karl Kuchenbecker and other crimes.

Burton won't be eligible for parole until 2033 .
