Internet mogul Kim Dotcom is hoping free ice-cream will buy new friends for his latest web venture.
Dotcom is at Giapo Ice Cream on Queen Street this afternoon handing out ice-creams and t-shirts to promote his new Mega file-locker service, which launches on January 20 at a big bash at his Coatesville mansion.
It appears the German national is going all out for Sunday's event tweeting: "Expect a press conference like no other. You know me. I can't do small."
Despite a series of legal victories against the police, Dotcom still faces an extradition hearing this year where authorities will argue he should be forced to face trial in the United States over charges his substantial wealth was obtained by widespread copyright infringement.
Dotcom, and his co-accused who ran the Megaupload site, deny the charges.
The launch of the new site is on the anniversary of Dotcom's arrest.
Before its sudden shutdown, Dotcom's former website Megaupload was one of the top sites on the Internet, with some reports stating it consumed 4% of all Internet traffic.
