Dog 'annihilates' penguin colony - charity

A West Coast Blue Penguin Trust says its devastated after dogs "annihilated" a Westport blue penguin colony.

Fifteen dead penguins were found by members of the public at the lighthouse end of the Cape Foulwind track.

The colony is only 1 kilometre away from an area where the Trust, which was formed by local residents in 2006, is attempting to attract blue penguins to a new colony where the public will be able to view them coming to their nests at dusk.

West Coast Blue Penguin Trust Ranger Reuben Lane says they all had puncture wounds, and authorities have had reports from the public about dogs roaming free in the area.
