A diver is undergoing decompression treatment after an incident in Lake Rotorua.
The 24-year-old man held his breath while ascending and suffered chest pains while on a diving trip with friends.
He was flown by the Rotorua Bay Trust Helicopter to Devonport Naval base at 9pm for treatment in a hyperbaric chamber.
Due to the nature of decompression sickness, the helicopter had to fly up the coast to Waihi keeping at as low an altitude as possible.
