Destiny Church is refusing to comment on claims it broke up a small congregation, and took control of its assets.

A former elder from a small North Island church says the group had been gathering for more than 70 years but once Destiny became involved, the congregation fell apart.

The man says it was obvious from the first contact with Destiny Church that money was going to be an issue. He says Brian Tamaki told the group he was planning a men's meeting and each man was told to show up with a cheque for $50.

The man says the small church became rebranded as part of the wider Destiny empire and he claims it was run more like a business than a church.

A building which had been owned by the church was signed over to Destiny, and has since been sold for a six-figure sum.
