Snow on the Desert Road - Source: ONE News
Desert Road in the central North Island has been reopened.
The road was closed from about 4.30am this morning due to ice.
Police told ONE News that motorists still need to exercise extreme caution when passing through the area.
MetService said snow showers were expected to ease this morning, but a few snow flurries were possible through to tonight.
Meanwhile, the Napier to Taupo highway, State Highway 5, reopened mid-morning after being closed by snow earlier in the morning.
Occasional snow or sleet showers were also forecast for the Rimutaka Hill Road this morning.
New Zealand is in for a chilly day today as a high pressure system moves up from the south bringing with it cold winds and low temperatures throughout.
