Part of the main rail track in the lower South Island is closed, following a derailment on Wednesday night.

KiwiRail says it expects to have the section of damaged track on the Main South Line near Palmerston, north of Dunedin, repaired by 8.00pm Thursday.

Nine wagons on a north-bound freight train derailed between Bushey and Hillgrove, just north of Palmerston township.

Trains will continue to operate on the Main South Line between Invercargill and Dunedin and between Christchurch and Oamaru.

The cause of the derailment is being investigated.
