One person is dead and another may be critically injured after a crash south of Whakatane.

The vehicle was an off roader which had gone over a bank near the Waimana bridge on Waimana Road, police said.

The person's death brought the weekend road toll to three.

A woman died in hospital after crashing in Waikato early yesterday.

The vehicle she was driving rolled on Hakanoa Street, Huntly, about 1.45am, and came to rest upside down in a creek beside the road, police said.

She was taken to Waikato hospital in a serious condition and later died.

A 34-year-old man was killed when the car he was driving crashed into a parked truck in Opotiki on Friday.

Two men in the car, aged 18 and 29, were seriously injured.

Alcohol and speed were factors in the crash, police said.

None of the three was wearing a seatbelt, Sergeant Ray Wylie of Whakatane police said.

No one was in the truck, though it had its lights on.
