The man acquitted of a 1990s rape and abduction who later went on to receive $868,000 in compensation, has admitted burgling a Palmerston North house.
David Dougherty served three years in prison for the rape and abduction but was acquitted at a retrial in 1997.
In the Palmerston North District Court this afternoon, he admitted going to a property in October to collect money he was owed. But he claimed he did not realise the previous owner had moved.
Dougherty then smashed open the ranch slider and stole beer and DVDs before being caught by the owner.
It was revealed last month that Dougherty has spent all of his compensation package.
He will be sentenced on March 31 next year.
