Child Youth and Family have taken a newborn baby from the mother of a Ngaruawahia infant who died from ''shaken baby'' injuries last year, a media report said.

Six-month-old Serenity Jay Scott-Dinnington died in Auckland's Starship hospital in April last year after her life-support was switched off.

Family were told by medical staff and police that they believe her injuries were consistent with shaken baby syndrome.

Serenity's mother, Chelsea Scott, gave birth to a baby girl on January 6 and within 48 hours CYF had taken over the care of the new baby.

The child is the first baby for Scott and her boyfriend Matthew Ellery. She also has a son from a previous relationship.

CYF general manager operations Marama Edwards confirmed to the Waikato Times the new baby girl was living with an approved CYF caregiver, who is believed to be Scott's cousin.

Serenity had been found unresponsive in a Havelock St house where Scott, Ellery, Scott's son and Scott's brother, Drew had been living.

Scott told the Waikato Times last October that she was afraid her child would be removed from her care.

"Due to the death of my baby daughter and because my son got taken away from me, I didn't want it getting out there," she said at the time.

Waikato police Detective Sergeant Mark Greene yesterday told the Times the investigation into the six-month-old's death was ongoing and they were awaiting forensic pathology results from overseas.

Deadly silence

Serenity's grandmother, Celeste Scott, of Papakura, said last year that she wanted details of how her granddaughter was injured brought to light because she did not want the case to become like the Chris and Cru Kahui investigation, where nobody had been held to account for their deaths.

''That's what everybody keeps saying, that they hope it isn't like that, but I really hope not because I don't want this family to go through what that family had to go through.''
