An Auckland doctor's frantic efforts to save a cyclist friend proved in vain when he died from massive head injuries, more than a day after a hit-and-run.
The two men, both North Shore doctors, were cycling about 25 metres apart on Peak Rd near Helensville, northwest of Auckland, about 9.20am on Wednesday when an old Toyota ute sped up behind them.
The ute hit Ian Graham Robinson, a 62-year-old doctor from Mairangi Bay, before driving off.
Dr Robinson flew over the handlebars and landed on his head.
Police said his friend did all he could help to Dr Robinson and accompanied him in the ambulance to hospital.
Dr Robinson never regained consciousness and died in hospital last night.
His friend was too distraught to talk about the death today.
Sergeant Mike Colson appealed to the public for help to identifying the Toyota ute and the driver.
He said the ute was old, either 1980s or 1990s, discoloured, and rough. It had a deck and a fibreglass canopy.
