The cyclist who was run down by a car in Auckland remains in a critical condition.

Civil engineer Greg Paterson was one of four riders hurt when a car ploughed into a pack of 20 cyclists on Saturday morning.

A serious crash unit is investigating the accident at the intersection of Tamaki Drive and Vale Road.

Police inspector Willie Taylor says the driver apparently went through a compulsory stop, before colliding with the group.

Taylor says the bikers were part of a regular recreational cycling group and were not at fault.

Charges are expected to be laid against the driver.
