Police in the UK say they are trying to confirm how 35-year-old Scott Williams ended up in the back of a rubbish truck.

It's thought Williams, a teacher at a top British school, may have sought shelter in the bin after a night out drinking in the city of Brighton.

"We're trying to test the theory that maybe Scott climbed into the wheelie bin of his own accord - in all probability to shelter from the rain in the early hours of Sunday morning. We can't confirm that at at this stage and our enquiries are trying to establish that that is the case," said Detective Chief Inspector Graham Pratt of the Sussex police.

His crushed body wasn't found until the truck was emptied at a waste transfer site.

Staff at Sussex Waste Recycling were sent home for the day following the grisly discovery at 7am.

Dave Ely, a director at the company, says a dustcart had tipped a load of black bin waste from the Brighton area.

"After it left, staff started looking through the waste and one of them saw what he thought was a body. At that point the police were alerted and that is as much as we know."

Kille says all next of kin have been informed.

The company which unknowingly emptied Williams body into a rubbish truck said it would be inappropriate to comment while the police investigation is still underway.

Williams has been in the UK for nine years and taught maths and coached rugby at London's exclusive Harrow School - the All Blacks trained there on their November tour.

Detectives first thought Williams' injuries were suspicious but a post mortem later showed that he had been crushed to death.

Local unions say this was a tragedy waiting to happen - two months ago a homeless man narrowly avoided being emptied out of a bin into a rubbish truck.

"These are dangerous because there's no checks that take place before they're actually loaded into the refuse lorries," says Robert Macy, the GMB Union spokesman.

Williams was a rugby coach and PR teacher at Pakuranga College in Auckland before he left for the UK in 2000.
