An Air New Zealand plane on a test flight has crashed in the Mediterranean sea. Five New Zealanders are believed to have been on board, as well as two Germans.

So far three bodies have been recovered and the other four people on board are missing presumed dead.

The last time an Air New Zealand Plane crashed with fatal consequences was the Mt Erebus crash in 1979, when one of its DC-10s crashed during an Antarctic scenic flight.

All 257 people aboard died when the plane crashed into Mt Erebus.

In an eerie coincidence this crash occurred on the 29th anniversary of the accident.

NZ icon Sir Edmund Hillary, who died in Januray, was supposed to be on the Erebus flight. He had been scheduled to act as a commentator but had to pull out due to work commitments elsewhere. His close friend Peter Mulgrew was his replacement.
