Craig Stanaway is a multi award winning broadcast journalist.
He holds the rare distinction of being a winner at the three major Journalism Awards in New Zealand, namely the New Zealand Radio Awards, the Qantas Media Awards and the TP McLean Awards for Sports Journalism.
2012 marks Craigs 16th year as a sports journalist. In his seven year career at One News, he has reported live from every continent in the world except Antarctica. His wealth of broadcasting experience includes covered the Olympic Games, the FIFA World Cup, the Rugby League World Cup and more recently the Rugby World Cup for TVNZ.
In 2000 Craig became the youngest person ever to be named Best Sports Broadcaster at the New Zealand Radio Awards for his Scoreboard Show on Newstalk ZB in Wellington. He remains the only person to beat Martin Devlin to the award. He also claimed a Qantas Award for Best Sports Programme. Previously he had been a finalist for his radio work at 2XS FM in Palmerston North.
From 2001 to 2004, Craig worked in London under notorious tabloid editor, Kelvin MacKenzie, the former boss at The Sun. The man behind the infamous headlines GOTCHA and FREDDIE STARR ATE MY HAMSTER
TVNZ highlights include:
Being with the All Blacks in 2006 when they beat France 47-3 at Lyon. It remains the biggest every away victory against the Les Bleus. A week earlier he had reported from Twickenham as the All Blacks stacked up a record 41 points against England.
Reporting from Beijing in 2008 as the Ever-Swindell twins defended their Olympic title.
Being pitch-side in Brisbane in 2008 as the Kiwis lifted the Rugby League World Cup.
Reporting from South Africa for six weeks in 2010 as the All Whites created World Cup history. He also filed reports from inside Soccer City as Spain beat the Netherlands 1-0 in the FIFA World Cup Final.
In 2012, Craigs primary focus will be the Warriors. He returns to reporting on the club after a two year hiatus. He also has a busy year covering rowing with New Zealand expected to feature prominently in the medals at the London Olympic Games.
