The trial of Otago University tutor Clayton Weatherston enters its second day on Thursday.

He denies murdering his former girlfriend and student Sophie Elliot in January last year, but has pleaded guilty to her manslaughter.

Crown prosecutor Marie Grills told the High Court jury in Dunedin on Wednesday that the 22-year-old died as a result of Weatherston stabbing her 216 times.

She said he did so in a calm way with a significant degree of pre-meditation, having decided to drive to Elliot's home taking a knife with him.

Defence counsel Judith Ablet-Kerr QC said Weatherston is guilty of manslaughter as he was provoked and lost self control.

On Thursday morning the court will hear from Sophie Elliot's mother who walked in on her daughter being attacked.
