Convicted murderer Richard Lakich is in need of a new heart, but is refusing to put himself on the transplant list.

Lakich was 19 when he killed Ranfurly policeman Peter Umbers in 1990. He completed a 14 year sentence for the crime and says he is now just happy to be a father.

However, he has told TVNZ's Sunday programme he still does not believe he deserves to be given a new heart.

"Why give it to me, I don't deserve it. I think it should go to someone better," he says.

Peter Umbers' family, his widow Sue and her two daughters, say if Lakich needs a new heart he should get one, for the sake of his own family.
