Women's groups are concerned about the recent spike in the number of domestic violence incidents, particularly amongst the middle class.
Women's refuge launches its annual nationwide appeal on Monday, with an emphasis on encouraging people to talk more openly about domestic abuse.
They say the effects of the recession and rising unemployment are being blamed for the rise in abuse rates within more affluent households.
Women's Refuge's chief executive Heather Henare says that domestic violence happens across the board, and around the country, not just in lower socio-economic sectors.
She says the number of calls they are receiving from white middle class throughout New Zealand, highlights the effects the recession is having on household.
