The Principal Youth Court Judge is concerned an increasing trend in young people committing crime with knives overseas, may be replicated in New Zealand.

Andrew Becroft has welcomed ideas in a just released Ministry of Justice report into knife possession laws .

One idea is schools educating youth in the dangers of using knives.

Judge Becroft says they raised concerns last year and action is needed.

He says what he sees in the Youth Court is young people taking kitchen knives with them when they go out.

Other options in the report include developing an accord to limit the sale of knives to young people.
