Genesis Energy is in the bad books with customers using its pre-paid electricity service after a computer error left some without power during a weekend most of us were turning the heaters up to high.

In the Strutton's powerless household in Upper Hutt, the kittens have been the only source of entertainment.

But it is mum who got her claws out for Genesis.

"I have two asthmatic kids so it's a lot of hassles and it hail and snowed here last night and it's been freezing," says Kim Strutton.

Genesis says a pre-paid power account cannot be shut off over the weekend and instead customers just go into debt.

But a computer error has made it impossible for customers nationwide to top up their accounts over the weekend, so at 8am Monday some were cut off without warning.

"I'm annoyed, very annoyed. It's not the first time they've done this. Last time was Easter when they stated that power stays on on public holidays but it doesn't and nothing is open," says Strutton.

In Masterton, the Collinsons were better prepared but equally as annoyed.

"Fuming, absolutely fuming, because I was told absolutely categorically before we had this installed that this would not happen," says Diane Collinson.

It was a cold and miserable day in Masterton and on Sunday it was snowing so it is no surprise that there were over 40 at the local dairy wanting to top up their Genesis power account.

ONE News contacted Genesis on Monday morning but their spokesman did not even know about the problem, and would not appear on camera.

They now say the problem has been fixed and customers seeking compensation should get in touch.

"I just want to get the power back on and then we'll take it from there but I think we're going to be letting our fingers do the walking if you know what I mean," says Collinson.

A move that may just light a fire under Genesis.
