Auckland's Mt Eden Prison may become New Zealand's first privately managed jail.

The redevelopment of the prison is due to be completed in 2011.

Corrections Minister Judith Collins told the New Zealand Herald she would look at putting it under private management then.

"It's much easier if we can enter into a contract when the prison is empty, rather than when we have to do a changeover.

"We're certainly not saying no to the possibility of a privately run existing prison, should that be desirable and necessary."
