NIWA's James Renwick says there is a complex system over New Zealand.
"We had very warm air with a lot of moisture down near the ground and very cold air came over the top. It's a bir like having a pot ona stove. You've got the heat at the bottom, cold at the top ... it bubble up and blows up these big thunderstorm coulds," says Renwick.
On Monday, a storm hit the Western Bay of Plenty with heavy rain, waterspouts and hail stones the size of a 20 cent coin hitting the area.
Just before midday Monday, a violent thunderstorm brought chaos to Papamoa and Mount Maunganui, with hail coating the areas.
There were also thunderstorms and hail in Tauranga, Whakatane and Opotiki on Monday afternoon.
Up to 10 centimetres of hail fell in places, blocking drains and flooding several streets and houses.
Kiwifruit growers are also assessing damage done by the storm.
Te Puke grower Todd Rutter is devastated by the hail damage from the freak storm
"The best way to describe it is that it was like someone gettign a shotgun and just firing it into all of the canopy and kiwifruit ... all the leaves have got like a dozen holes in each and it looks really bad."
Rutter says the damage could potentially mean the loss of any
income for the next year.
